For those of us working in mobile messaging, the story at MWC 2026 wasn’t just about AI, satellites or the path to 6G. A secondary interesting shift was happening slightly beneath the headlines, that is, messaging is finally evolving from a notification channel into a core layer of digital customer experience.
Across conversations with operators, CPaaS providers and other platform vendors, several themes kept emerging. Here are the messaging takeaways that stood out most for us at Openmind Networks.
For years, RCS has been described as “the next generation of SMS.” At MWC 2026 it felt much closer to becoming a mainstream reality. Similar to AI, RCS has moved from being a vague concept to one that is more rooted in use cases and real world examples. The momentum for operators to invest in RCS as the next generation of messaging is rooted in the early adopter experience.
A major driver is ecosystem alignment. With both Android and iOS now supporting RCS, the potential reach of rich messaging experiences has expanded significantly. That changes the conversation for enterprises.
Instead of building engagement strategies around fragmented messaging channels, businesses can start to think about RCS as a scalable way to deliver richer, branded messaging experiences directly within the native messaging environment.
For operators, this opens up new opportunities to support enterprise messaging that goes well beyond traditional SMS notifications. Though return on investment is still a sticking point for operators, it does feel like a critical mass of adopters has now been reached internationally.
Another theme that appeared consistently across panels and vendor discussions was the role of messaging in digital customer journeys.
Messaging is no longer just about alerts or one-way communication. Increasingly, it’s becoming the first place customers interact with a brand. Not only is messaging the on-ramp to communication between enterprises and customers but it is not simply a way station on the way to an online experience. Instead, messaging is the entire channel where the communication takes place.
Customer service, product discovery, appointment management, authentication and even commerce transactions are all moving into messaging threads. Think about how logistics companies speak to deliverees, how patient appointments are coordinated, even how you buy from your favourite brands!
What’s interesting is that this shift isn’t being driven by technology alone. It’s being driven by user behaviour. Customers are already spending significant time inside messaging apps, and enterprises are meeting them there.
For telecom operators and messaging platforms, that makes messaging a much more strategic capability than it was even a few years ago.

Artificial intelligence was everywhere at MWC this year, but in messaging the implications are particularly tangible.
Combining messaging channels with conversational AI is allowing enterprises to automate interactions that previously required human support. Instead of static notifications, businesses can create dynamic conversations that guide users through a journey. The heavy lifting of customer interaction is increasingly handled by AI thereby saving massively on frontline staffing costs.
This might mean helping a customer troubleshoot an issue, confirming an appointment, or completing a purchase without ever leaving the messaging interface.
As AI models become more capable, messaging increasingly acts as the interface layer between businesses and their customers.
Another clear trend is the continued growth of communications platforms that orchestrate multiple messaging channels.
Enterprises are rarely relying on a single messaging channel anymore. Instead, they are combining SMS, RCS and OTT messaging platforms like WhatsApp to reach customers in different contexts.
The challenge is coordinating these channels in a coherent way.
That’s where messaging platforms and network-level messaging infrastructure play a crucial role. They allow operators and enterprises to manage routing, compliance, delivery and orchestration across multiple channels through a single platform layer.
At MWC this year, that orchestration capability felt increasingly central to the messaging ecosystem.
Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from MWC 2026 is that messaging channels are no longer competing with each other in the way they once did.
Instead, they are forming a layered ecosystem.
SMS remains essential for universal reach, authentication and critical alerts.
RCS enables richer interactions and branded messaging experiences.
OTT messaging apps support conversational engagement and service interactions.
AI adds a new automation layer that can manage interactions across all of these channels.
For enterprises, the challenge is no longer choosing the “right” messaging channel. It’s designing a messaging strategy that orchestrates them effectively.

Walking the disorienting halls of MWC this year, the narratives slowly became clear. Messaging is moving from a simple communications tool to a foundational layer of digital interaction between businesses and customers.
For operators, vendors and messaging platforms, that raises an important question: how do we support enterprises in building these new kinds of messaging experiences while maintaining the reliability, security and global reach that mobile messaging has always delivered?
That’s a conversation we found ourselves having repeatedly throughout the week in Barcelona. MWC 2026 reinforced something we’ve believed for a long time at Openmind Networks: messaging continues to evolve, but its core value remains the same. It is still one of the most direct, trusted and universal ways for businesses to reach their customers.
