MNOs around the world are rapidly moving towards shutting down 2G and 3G networks to make way for more advanced technologies like 4G and 5G. The trend towards phasing out 2G and 3G is geographically distinct with European, North American and Asian countries being the first to sunset. It is likely that other regions will follow suit quickly as network improvements come to these areas.

Vodafone Ireland has announced plans to complete its 3G switch-off by the end of 2024. This follows the steps of Vodafone UK, which, along with EE, has already decommissioned 3G services earlier this year.

Three UK is also aiming for a 2024 switch-off, while Virgin Media O2 plans to complete its transition by 2025.

In Brazil, Anatel, the national telecom regulator, has outlined its own timeline to discontinue both 2G and 3G networks, reflecting a broader regional push towards next-generation networks.

Other markets have already moved ahead. In Australia, Telstra will complete its 3G switch off later this month, reallocating spectrum to improve 4G and 5G services. Similarly, T-Mobile shut down its 3G network in 2022, with AT&T and Verizon following suit soon after.

These examples highlight the growing momentum of 2G/3G sunsetting, with many operators targeting a complete shutdown by 2025 at the latest. MNOs that haven’t yet defined their plans are facing increasing pressure to do so to stay competitive and future-proof their networks.

As network operators begin to decommission older infrastructure, having a clear policy in place becomes essential for a seamless transition. Such a policy allows for the efficient reallocation of spectrum to newer technologies, offering significant performance improvements while reducing operating costs tied to maintaining aging systems.

However, the transition is not just a technical exercise – it affects millions of customers who still rely on 2G/3G networks, especially in regions where smartphones and newer devices are less prevalent. 2. Maintaining SMS as a Fallback

While newer generations (4G and 5G) offer superior data-based messaging options, SMS continues to play a pivotal role in situations where data services are not available. The transition to more advanced networks must still support SMS fallback, particularly for mission-critical messaging like one-time passwords, banking alerts, and emergency notifications.

3. Supporting IoT and M2M Applications

Many IoT and M2M applications still use 2G networks for their low data requirements and wide coverage. Ensure your messaging infrastructure is prepared to support SMS fallback and leverage RCS capabilities in areas where newer technologies are available. This will enable a smooth transition for users and open opportunities to deliver richer services.

Develop a multi-channel communication strategy that informs customers about the network changes and provides clear guidance on how they can continue accessing messaging services during and after the transition. Consider targeted messaging campaigns using SMS itself to reach users still on 2G/3G.
